Install the plugin
You’ll have Structura installed and ready to activate in about two minutes. This page covers installing from the WordPress.org plugin directory; if you have a ZIP file (e.g., from a trial distribution), see the Upload a ZIP file section below. You can also set your site up in the customer portal first and install the plugin last; see Set up in the customer portal first.
Before you start
You need:
- A WordPress site that can install plugins (self-hosted, or WordPress.com on a paid plan) running WordPress 6.8 or later and PHP 7.4 or later.
- An administrator account on that site (you need the
install_pluginscapability). - A Structura account. If you don’t have one yet, that’s fine — you’ll create one during activation (the Free tier costs nothing), and it issues you a license key you’ll paste back into the plugin. You can upgrade later.
Structura does not work on the WordPress.com Free plan, because that plan can’t install plugins. Every paid WordPress.com plan can. We have tested Structura on the Business and Commerce plans. It should also work on Personal and Premium, but we haven’t tested those plans yet. It works on any self-hosted WordPress site.
Steps
- In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New.
- In the search box, type StructuraWP.
- On the StructuraWP card, click Install Now.
- Wait for the install to finish, then click Activate.
![]()
That’s it — the plugin is installed. WordPress redirects you to the Plugins list, and you’ll see Structura in the left sidebar.
What happens next
Click Structura in your WordPress admin sidebar. The first screen explains what the plugin shares with Structura Cloud (your site address and title, WordPress and plugin version, and your site’s branding details) and asks you to confirm. Nothing is sent before you click Connect to Structura Cloud; if you change your mind, simply deactivate the plugin. After confirming you’ll land on the Account & License screen, where you’ll connect or activate your license key. The next page, Activate your license, walks through that.
Upload a ZIP file
If you were given a ZIP file:
- Go to Plugins → Add New.
- Click Upload Plugin at the top.
- Click Choose File, pick the
structura.zipyou were given, and click Install Now. - After it uploads, click Activate Plugin.
From here, the flow is identical to the directory install.
Set up in the customer portal first
You can set up a WordPress site in the customer portal before the plugin is on it: name, language, positioning, visuals and personas. The plugin comes last and picks up everything you set up there.
- In the customer portal at app.structurawp.com , select Connect a site, enter your WordPress site’s Public website URL, and select Continue. Structura recognises WordPress, creates the site and opens Site info with WordPress as the Platform.
- Work through the setup wizard. Its last step, Connect, shows how to install the plugin and your license key, with Copy key.
- Install the plugin as in Steps above, or select Download plugin .zip on the Connect step and upload the ZIP file.
- In wp-admin, click Structura (confirm with Connect to Structura Cloud if it asks), then go to Structura → Account & License, paste the key and click Connect Account.
- The Connect step in the customer portal continues by itself once the plugin connects. Your site carries on in the portal, and the plugin skips its own setup wizard because you already finished it.
Until the plugin connects, the site shows Waiting for the plugin in your Sites list and Structura doesn’t write posts for it, but it already takes one of your plan’s site slots. Not ready to install yet? Select Connect later on the Connect step. Your key stays on your workspace home, in the Plugin license key card, and under Workspace settings.
If the plugin is already on the site when you enter its address, Structura says This site already runs Structura. and shows your key instead. Paste it in wp-admin, and the wizard opens on that site once the plugin connects. An install that started from WordPress.org works as before: install the plugin, then activate your license in wp-admin.
Common issues
“Installation failed: destination folder already exists.”
You (or a previous owner) installed Structura before, and the folder
wp-content/plugins/structura/ is still on disk. Go to
Plugins → Installed Plugins, find any existing Structura entry,
and click Delete. Then retry the install.
“Couldn’t create directory.”
WordPress can’t write to the plugins folder. This is almost always a
file-permissions issue on your host; contact your hosting provider and
ask them to set wp-content/plugins/ to permissions that let WordPress
write (typically 755 with the right owner).
I can’t find “Add New” in my sidebar.
Your WordPress user role doesn’t have the install_plugins capability.
Most commonly this means you’re signed in as an Editor instead of
an Administrator. Sign in with an admin account, or ask an admin
on the site to install the plugin for you.
